A joint communique signed Wednesday by the National Civil Registration Authority Director General, Mohamed MASSAQUOI and the Sierra Leone Roads Safety Authority’s Executive Director, the Rev Smart K Senesie, now mandates all applications for new registration of vehicles including tricycles and motor cycles; Transfer of Ownership, Attestation, International Drivers’ Permit and Driving Licensing to include the National Identification Number (NIN) issued by NCRA as a mandatory field.

The heads of the two authorities agreed among others:

“That effective 1st August, 2022, all applications for New Registration of Vehicles, Tricycles, Motor Cycles, Transfer of Ownership, Attestation, International Drivers Permit and Drivers Licensing MUST include the National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA) as a Mandatory field.
That the security features of the NIN ensure people have one unique identity recorded thereby removing cases of double or multiple identities per person which may have security implications; may lead to pranks, identity manipulations and fraud”.
The communique urged the general public to comply with the provisions of the required mandatory field – the NIN. The use of the NIN helps to contain fraud associated with vehicle ownership. It also makes it easier to identify drivers involved in traffic offenses as well as helps track stolen or lost vehicles. Significantly too, it halts the issuance of fake Driver’s licenses and documentation.
